Excavations of Pompeii
Pompeii is the only archaeological site in the world able to show the appearance of an ancient Roman center in its entirety. Full of traffic and pulsating life, the city was crystallized by the famous eruption of 79 AD, during which a rain of ashes and lapilli wrapped everything: houses, inhabitants, streets, public buildings and objects of everyday life. Everything came as "stuck" in a terrible snapshot.
A catastrophe, a cataclysm to which merit goes, however, to have allowed the exceptional preservation of the city and its treasures: the urban layout, the monumental buildings, the houses of the common people and the splendid houses decorated with mosaics and famous wall paintings.
With its 44 hectares of excavated area, Pompeii is one of the most famous and visited archaeological sites in the world, with over two million visitors a year.
Timetables
From November 1st to March 31st: from 8.30am to 5pm - (last admission 3.30pm)
From 1 April to 31 October from 8.30 to 19.30 - (last entry at 18.00)
